How to Choose a Wedding Photographer Who Feels Right

Wedding Tips

Hi, I'm AJ and I'm the artist behind AJ Coeur.  So glad you're here.

When you first start looking for a wedding photographer, everything can start to look… similar. The images are beautiful. The lighting is soft. The compositions are clean.

And yet, narrowing it down can feel harder than expected. Because at a certain point, it’s no longer about finding someone whose work looks good. It’s about finding someone whose work feels right to you.

Why “beautiful” isn’t always enough

Most photographers you’re considering will create beautiful images. That’s often the baseline.

But what separates one from another isn’t always obvious at first glance. Sometimes, it’s something you feel before you can fully explain it. You might find yourself drawn to certain galleries more than others without knowing exactly why.

That instinct is worth paying attention to.

Pay attention to how the photos feel, not just how they look

As you’re looking through portfolios, try to go a step further than just asking:

“Do I like how this looks?”

Instead, ask:

  • Do these people look comfortable?
  • Do their interactions feel natural?
  • Can I picture myself in these photos?

The answers to those questions will tell you far more than aesthetics alone.

Your photographer shapes more than just your photos

This is the part many couples don’t realize until later. Your photographer isn’t just documenting your day. They’re influencing how it feels while it’s happening.

A very hands-on approach can make the day feel structured and controlled. A very hands-off approach can leave you feeling unsure of what to do. Most couples are looking for something in between. Someone who can guide when needed, but also step back enough to let the day unfold naturally.

The experience matters just as much as the result

When you think about your wedding photos years from now, you won’t just be thinking about how they look. You’ll remember how it felt to take them. Whether you felt present. Whether you felt like yourselves.
Whether the experience added to the day or took you out of it.

That’s why the right fit goes beyond style.

If something feels different, it probably is

If you’ve come across a photographer’s work that feels noticeably different, more natural, more grounded, more like something you could actually see yourself in, that’s not accidental.

There’s usually a thoughtful approach behind it. If you’re trying to put that feeling into words, this might help:

Choosing your photographer is less about finding the “best” work, and more about finding the work that feels most aligned with you. Because when that alignment is there, everything else tends to fall into place.
